Concentrated household products can be cheaper—but only if their cost per effective use is lower. A smaller bottle, a higher price, or a “concentrated” label cannot answer that question on its own.
What matters is how much you pay, how much product each job requires, and whether it cleans well at that dose. For refill systems, the cost of bottles and delivery also belongs in the comparison.
Compare the cleaning you get, not just the liquid you buy.
Shelf unit prices are useful for comparing pack sizes. The UK’s Competition and Markets Authority explains that they show prices on a common basis, such as per litre or kilogram.
But price per litre needs context when products have different concentrations. If one detergent requires half as much liquid per wash, comparing equal volumes misses that difference.
Use this calculation instead:
Cost per use = purchase price ÷ number of uses at the appropriate label dose
For laundry, compare equivalent loads. For a cleaner you dilute, compare the cost per litre of prepared solution at the dilution recommended for the same task. That comparison assumes you use similar amounts and get satisfactory results.
Here is a hypothetical example in pounds, not current retail pricing:

The concentrate costs more per bottle and per litre, yet exactly the same per wash. At a hypothetical price of £7, it would cost 17.5p per wash—a saving of 2.5p, or £5 over 200 washes.
That is a useful saving to understand at its actual size.
The dose can change the answer.
The American Cleaning Institute, a US industry association, explains that concentrated laundry detergents require smaller quantities than unconcentrated versions and recommends following the label and using the supplied measuring cap or scoop. In the hypothetical comparison above, pouring 50 ml of concentrate instead of 25 ml would halve the bottle’s lifespan and raise its cost to 40p per wash.

So the useful question is: How many of your usual washes will this bottle provide at the recommended dose?
Refills need a slightly wider calculation.
For concentrated surface cleaners or dissolvable refills, consider:
- Prepared volume: Compare equal amounts of ready-to-use cleaner. “One refill” is not a common size.
- Starter equipment: Include any required bottle or dispenser in your first purchase.
- Delivery: Add charges that you incur to obtain the product.
- Repeat pricing: Separate an introductory offer from the price of later orders.
- Usable quantity: Base the calculation on what you expect to use, following the product’s storage instructions.
A hypothetical £4 reusable bottle paired with refills that save £1 each would recover its bottle cost after four refills, assuming no other cost differences. Before that point, the system would still have cost more overall.

What matters to you here: the lowest ongoing cost, a smaller payment today, or a product that is easy to measure and store? Those preferences can lead to different reasonable choices.
A concentrate earns its place as the cheaper option when the correct dose delivers satisfactory cleaning at a lower total cost. A ready-to-use product can still offer better value if its price is lower, its purchase fits your budget, or the refill system’s extra costs outweigh the savings.
