Does a Shorter Shower Really Save Money? A Simple Test

Yes. A shorter shower normally saves money because you use less water and less energy to heat it.

The amount may be modest for one shower, but regular savings can add up. Your result depends on your showerhead, water temperature, heating system, utility rates, and whether your bill includes usage-based charges.

Here is a simple way to estimate the saving using your own shower and bills.

Step 1: Measure your shower’s flow rate

You need:

  • A bucket or large measuring container
  • A stopwatch
  • A measuring jug, if the container has no volume markings

Run the shower at your usual pressure and temperature. Collect the water for 10 seconds, then measure it.

Multiply the collected amount by six to find the flow per minute.

For example, collecting 1.3 litres in 10 seconds gives a flow rate of approximately 7.8 litres per minute:

1.3 litres × 6 = 7.8 litres per minute

If you use gallons, follow the same method.

For context, US showerheads commonly have a maximum flow of 2.5 gallons per minute, while showerheads carrying the EPA’s WaterSense label use no more than 2.0 gallons, or 7.6 litres, per minute. WaterSense models must also satisfy performance requirements for factors such as spray force and coverage, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.

Your measured rate is more useful than the rate printed on the showerhead because household water pressure and shower settings can affect the actual flow.

Step 2: Time a normal shower

Time the water, not your entire bathroom routine.

Start the timer when you turn on the shower and stop it when the water goes off. If you leave the water running while shampooing or shaving, include that time.

Repeat this for three typical showers and calculate the average. This gives you a more realistic baseline than timing one unusually rushed or relaxed morning.

Step 3: Test a shorter shower

Choose a reduction that feels manageable—perhaps two or three minutes.

Use the same shower settings and time the water again. You do not need to rush. The purpose is to see whether you can remove idle running time or simplify your routine without making the shower unpleasant.

Calculate the water saved with this formula:

Flow rate × minutes removed = water saved per shower

A hypothetical example

Suppose your shower uses 8 litres per minute and you shorten it from eight minutes to five:

8 litres × 3 minutes = 24 litres saved per shower

With one shower every day:

24 litres × 365 = 8,760 litres per year

That is 8.76 cubic metres of water. If several people in your home make the same change, multiply the result by their number of showers.

Step 4: Convert the water saving into money

Check your latest utility bill or supplier’s published tariff. Use the current rate for your location rather than a national average.

If your water is billed by volume:

Annual water saved × water rate = water-cost saving

Include a separate wastewater or sewer rate if it is also charged according to measured water use.

For the hypothetical example above:

8.76 m³ × your combined variable water and wastewater rate

Only include charges that change when consumption changes. Fixed service, meter, or account charges will usually remain the same even when you use less water.

If your home does not have a water meter and you pay a fixed water charge, a shorter shower may not reduce that bill immediately. It can still lower the energy needed for hot water.

Do not forget the heating cost

A warm shower mixes hot and cold water, so not every litre comes from the water heater. Even so, using less mixed water generally means heating less water.

The exact energy saving depends on:

  • How much hot water is in the mix
  • The incoming cold-water temperature
  • Your chosen shower temperature
  • Whether you use electricity, gas, oil, district heating, or another system
  • The efficiency and heat losses of your water heater

For the most practical test, compare your household’s energy meter before and after several similar showers while other major appliances are off. One reading may be noisy, so repeat the test and use the average.

Avoid applying your total electricity or gas price blindly. Some bill components are fixed, while others change with consumption. Use the variable price per kilowatt-hour or fuel unit shown on your current tariff.

The EPA confirms that efficient showers can reduce both water use and water-heating demand. Its US estimate says replacing one conventional showerhead with a WaterSense model can save an average family about 2,700 gallons of water annually, although your result can differ substantially based on household use and existing equipment (EPA WaterSense).

When will the saving be largest?

A shorter shower tends to save more when:

  • Your shower has a high flow rate
  • You cut several minutes rather than a few seconds
  • You take frequent showers
  • Water and wastewater are billed by volume
  • Your hot-water energy rate is high
  • More than one person follows the shorter routine

If your shower already has a low flow rate, your monetary saving will be smaller—but it will not normally be zero.

Shorter shower or efficient showerhead?

You can combine both.

Reducing the duration lowers the number of minutes water runs. An efficient showerhead lowers the amount used during each minute. Together, they reduce consumption without requiring an extremely short shower.

Check the flow rate before buying anything. If it is already low and the shower performs well, shortening the running time may be the simplest option. In the United States, a WaterSense label provides independent certification of water efficiency and performance; other countries may use different efficiency labels or plumbing standards.

The clearest answer comes from your own numbers: measure the flow, remove a realistic number of minutes, and apply the variable rates from your current bills.
