A chest freezer is worth buying if you regularly run out of freezer space, can save or use enough food to cover its total cost, and will keep its contents organized. It is probably not worth it if you mainly want space for occasional bargains or tend to forget what you have stored.
The appliance itself is only part of the calculation. Electricity, wasted food, maintenance, floor space, and the risk of buying more than you can eat all affect the result.
The quick decision test
A chest freezer is a promising purchase when most of these statements are true:

A new efficient model may be more attractive when electricity is expensive, warranty protection matters, or the used appliance’s energy consumption is unknown.
The lowest-cost option may still be no purchase. First try reorganizing your existing freezer, using a weekly inventory, freezing food in flatter packages, and buying smaller quantities more deliberately.

Buy a chest freezer when conservative, documented annual savings exceed electricity and other ownership costs by a worthwhile margin—and when you have a credible system for using the food.
Wait if your calculation relies mainly on hoped-for bulk deals, if you cannot identify current space-related waste, or if the appliance would need to be financed at a high interest rate.
